About me
Mary Sakuma serves as the Butte County Superintendent of Schools and executive leader of the Butte County Office of Education (BCOE) team. Mary’s career exemplifies the BCOE motto “where students come first,” as evidenced by her thirty plus years of service dedicated exclusively to public education that has taken her from roles as classroom teacher, to school site principal, and then district superintendent, prior to her leadership roles at BCOE. Today she leads a broad swath of local and statewide programs that support student achievement and accelerate school-centered family services. Mary initially took office in 2019, and she holds the distinction as being the first woman elected to the position of Butte County Superintendent of Schools. Mary earned her B.A. from the University of California at Berkeley, her teaching credential at CSU, Chico, and her M.A. in Education as well as her Administrative Services Credential from Simpson University. Mary and her husband John are residents of Chico, CA.
